How to Trace an AI Claim Back to Its Original Source

Tracing a claim means finding the document where the number was first produced and reading the sentence that contains it. Not the blog post citing the study, not the press release about the study — the study. Most claims die somewhere in that chain, and they die in a predictable way: the figure is real, the organisation is correctly named, and the sentence in the source says something different from the sentence in your draft.

Here is the procedure, including what to do when the trail ends at a paywall or a 403, which happens more often than any fact-checking guide admits.

Step 1 — Write the claim as one checkable sentence

Before searching, isolate what is actually being asserted. "AI automates 45% of coding tasks" contains a number (45%), a unit (percent of coding tasks), a subject (AI) and an implied source. Each is separately checkable, and the assertion has to be pinned down before you can confirm or refute it.

Vague claims cannot be traced. If you cannot write the claim as one sentence with a number and a population, that is already the finding.

Step 2 — Search the exact figure with the organisation name

Put the number and the named source in quotes together. This takes seconds and splits the outcomes cleanly:

  • Nothing comes back — likely invented. Cut it.
  • Only AI-written content comes back, all phrased similarly — likely invented and now circulating. Cut it.
  • A primary document comes back — go to step 4.
  • Secondary coverage comes back — go to step 3.

Step 3 — Walk the citation chain to the bottom

Secondary coverage cites something. Open it, find its citation, open that. Repeat until you reach a document that produced the number rather than repeated it.

The chain usually shortens fast: blog cites news article, news article cites press release, press release describes a report. The report is the source. The press release is not, because press releases routinely round, simplify and reframe their own research.

Watch for the loop. If A cites B and B cites A, or three articles all cite each other and none cites a study, the number has no bottom. That is a finding, and the claim goes.

Step 4 — Read the sentence, not the document

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that catches the errors that get published.

Find the figure inside the source and read the full sentence containing it, plus the sentence before and after. Then compare it word by word against your draft's sentence.

Our own worked example: a consultancy finding about developers completing tasks 35–45% faster with AI assistance appeared in one of our posts as AI "automating 45% of coding tasks" (ANALYSIS, audit of 80 posts, 2026-09-02/03). The number was real. The organisation was right. The source existed and was linked. And the claim was different — speed of a human doing work, versus work no human does. Everything except reading the sentence passed.

Check specifically for:

  • Speed restated as automation, or a projection restated as a measurement.
  • A subset presented as the whole — "of surveyed enterprise developers" becoming "of developers".
  • A forecast in the present tense — a 2027 projection written as today's figure.
  • A range collapsed to its most impressive end.
  • A conditional dropped — "under ideal conditions", "for this task class".

Step 5 — Record the six parts

If it survives step 4, capture what makes it re-checkable by someone else: the number, the unit, the population, the date it was measured, the method, and the source. A figure missing any of the six is not yet usable, and the missing part is usually the population.

Put the measurement date in your sentence, not just the publication date. A 2022 survey published in 2024 and quoted in 2026 is a 2022 fact.

Step 6 — Handle the dead ends honestly

Trails end. In preparing recent posts we hit HTTP 403 on a vendor help centre, on a legal database and on a lab's documentation, and a paywall on an ISO standard. That is normal, and how you handle it is the whole difference between a sourced post and a confident one.

The last row is the house rule, and it is not negotiable in our own drafts.

Step 7 — Write the trace into the post

The trace is worth more to a reader than the claim. A sentence that carries the source, the date and the method can be checked by anyone in under a minute; a sentence carrying a bare percentage cannot be checked at all.

That also applies to what failed. Naming the page that returned 403, or the standard you could not read, tells a reader exactly how far your evidence goes — which is more useful than a clean-looking post that quietly skipped it.

How long this actually takes

Two to four minutes for a claim that traces cleanly. Ten to fifteen for one that runs through several layers of secondary coverage. A few minutes more for one that dies, most of which is spent confirming that it really has no bottom.

For a post with six statistics, budget half an hour. We spent considerably more than that retro-fitting sources onto posts that shipped without them, which is why gate 7 of the 42-check fact-check checklist exists.

What counts as a primary source?

Whoever produced the number. The research team, the agency that ran the survey, the company reporting its own figure. Not whoever wrote about it most clearly.

Can I cite a news article instead of the study?

Only by attributing it as a news report — "as reported by" — rather than implying you read the study. If the claim matters, get the study.

The AI gave me a source. Doesn't that count as tracing?

No. A citation says a document exists. Tracing is confirming that the document says what your sentence says, which requires opening it.

What if the study is paywalled?

Use the abstract if the figure is there. If it is not, say you could not read the full text and make no claim about its contents. Do not infer.

How do I know when to stop looking?

When you reach the organisation that produced the number, or when the chain provably loops with no primary document in it. The second is a finding worth stating.
