Zoom Unveils AI Notetaker, Avatars, and Productivity Tools at Zoomtopia 2025
Zoom has announced a major wave of AI-powered updates at its annual Zoomtopia conference, introducing a cross-application AI notetaker, lifelike AI avatars, smarter scheduling tools, and enhanced productivity features. With this launch, Zoom aims to take on specialized meeting startups and productivity suites by embedding powerful AI across its platform.
Cross-Platform AI Notetaker to Compete with Rivals
Zoom has long offered transcription and recording features, but its new AI Companion now works across platforms like Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Unlike its earlier version, this update allows users to capture meeting notes across applications—and even during in-person meetings.
This move puts Zoom in direct competition with tools like Read AI, Otter, Fireflies, Granola, and Circleback, which have gained traction as cross-application notetakers in recent years.
An added twist: users can jot down their own notes during a meeting, and Zoom’s AI will expand and structure them later, mirroring Granola’s collaborative approach.
AI-Enhanced Scheduling and Calendar Features
To make meeting management easier, Zoom’s AI Companion now includes calendar-focused features, such as:
Smart time slot suggestions to find availability for all participants.
“Free up my time” requests that identify meetings users can skip.
Proactive meeting recommendations, including agenda items and prep tasks.
Group AI assistant for collaborative scheduling and task management.
This aligns with similar AI tools recently launched by startups like Clockwise, signaling a growing trend toward intelligent meeting efficiency.
Photorealistic AI Avatars
One of the most buzzworthy announcements is the arrival of AI avatars that mimic user actions during video calls. Zoom says these avatars are especially useful when you’re not “camera-ready,” but they also raise concerns around deepfakes and impersonation—pushing companies to balance employee convenience with security risks.
The avatars, first teased earlier this year when CEO Eric Yuan used one during an earnings call, will debut by the end of 2025 for regular Zoom users.
Additionally, AI avatars will enhance Zoom Clips, the company’s asynchronous video tool, by greeting people in waiting rooms and explaining meeting purposes.
More AI Features for Productivity
Beyond meetings, Zoom is leaning into AI to power work across communication and content creation. New features include:
Real-time live translation for global collaboration.
AI writing assistant for drafting emails and documents.
Deep research tools to quickly gather insights.
Cross-platform search across Google and Microsoft services.
Custom AI agents with support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
Upgraded Platform Experience
Zoom is also rolling out improvements to its core platform, including:
A revamped web interface that spotlights the AI Companion.
Higher bit rate and 60fps support for smoother video meetings.
A new video management system for handling video assets.
Why This Matters
By embedding AI deeply into its ecosystem, Zoom is positioning itself as more than a video conferencing tool—it’s evolving into a full-fledged productivity suite. With competitors like Granola, Otter, and Clockwise carving out niches, this update shows Zoom is ready to fight back with a unified, AI-first strategy.
